(FREDERICTON, NB) The Memorial Sea-Hawks completed a weekend sweep of the UNB Varsity Reds, scoring a 3-0 win on Sunday afternoon.
The Sea-Hawks won with scores of 25-23, 29-27 and 25-19.
It was the third win for Memorial in three weekend matches against the Varsity Reds.
Jill Snow(Bishop's Falls, NL) led Memorial with 14 kills and a dozen digs.
Sarah Dawe(Mount Pearl, NL) contributed 13 kills and Kassandra Menzies(Spirit River, AB) registered 20 digs. Dawe was named the Subway Player of the Game.
Megan Kuciack(Ottawa, ON) led the UNB effort with 11 kills and 8 digs.
The two sides traded points through much of the early part of the first set, before the Varsity Reds established a 20-17 lead.
Ties of 21-21, 22-22 and 23-23 followed before the Sea-Hawks pulled away for the 25-23 win.
The second set saw the VReds rally from a 16-11 deficit to tie it at 23, 24, 25, 26 and 27.
Memorial scored three straight points in winning the set 29-27.
"You can't take teams like that lightly," said Snow. "If you let your guard down, they will take advantage and we did let our guard down at points and they did take advantage."
The Sea-Hawks held their momentum in the third, racing out to leads of 5-0 and 12-6 on route to a 25-19 win.
Despite another loss, Kuciak says the Varsity Reds are seeing progress.
"No matter what, it just gets us excited to see those glimpses of hope, those good plays that we had," she said. "It helps us to go back day after day and put in the work to make those little improvements so that we can come out a little bit better next game."
With the win, Memorial is now 11-3 and sits second in the Atlantic University Sport standings.
The Varsity Reds are 0-13.
Up next for UNB, matches Friday and Saturday at Dalhousie.
