UNB Drops Friendly At Maine

(ORONO, Maine) The UNB Varsity Reds women’s soccer team closed the book on their 2017-18 competition year, dropping a close 2-1 decision to the University of Maine Black Bears.

On a sunny, but cool Sunday afternoon in Orono, the host team struck first.

The Black Bears took advantage of a UNB turnover to open the scoring 15 minutes in.

The Varsity Reds evened the score in the 70th minute.

Veteran fullback Lindsey Lohnes(Bridgewater, NS) delivered an over the top pass to graduating senior Ellen Arsenault(Summerside, PE), streaking down the sideline. Arsenault then made an impressive cross which Emma Donnelly(Ottawa, ON) finished for her first goal in a UNB uniform.

Maine added a goal in the 81st minute to earn the victory.

“It was our first time outdoors since the fall, so once everyone was comfortable there was a lot of good to take away from this,” said Varsity Reds head coach Jon Crossland. “Obviously, we never want to lose, but we played everyone that was healthy and they competed hard and had success in things we’ve worked on over the winter.”

This was the fourth year for the UNB-Maine friendlies.

“It’s great competition,” says Crossland. “They pose challenges for us size-wise, athletically, and tactically. It’s become a great way to wrap up our year and it’s something both teams look forward to.

The Varsity Reds open the 2018 Atlantic University Sport schedule on September 8th, at Cape Breton University.
