(WOLFVILLE, NS) The Axewomen soccer team stepped one game closer to finishing the season in first place in the AUS standings with a 1-0 win over the visiting UNB Varsity Reds, on Friday night.

Axewomen head coach Amit Batra was relieved with the win. "It was a nice win. UNB is a playoff team and you could see why tonight. It was tough to breakdown the win but credit to our players for their effort. We are on to Sunday now."

Acadia improves to 9-1-2 with one game remaining in the regular season, while the Varsity Reds drop to 5-2-5 and hold onto fourth spot in the standings - four points ahead of StFX who have a game in hand.

The only goal of the match game from AUS scoring leader Meghan Earle (Mt. Pearl, Nfld.) who effortlessly sent the ball to the high corner against UNB Keeper Sami-Jo Bell (East Dover, N.S.). The goal was Earle's 11th of the season. Jemma LeBlanc assisted on the lone goal.

Emily Nickerson (Coldbrook N.S.) was named the Subway Player of the Game for her defensive efforts while UNB's Laura McNicholas (Doncaster, UK) captured the honour for the V-Reds.
