Trio Of Forwards Join V-Reds

(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Varsity Reds women’s hockey team has secured commitments from three more players as it prepares to return to Atlantic University Sport play next season.

With the most recent additions, the team now has a dozen players committed to joining the program.

Varsity Reds head coach Sarah Hilworth has received signed U SPORTS Letters of Intent from forwards Katherine Chadwick(Kanata, ON), Lily George(Garden Village, ON), and Myah Bowal(Terrace, BC).

Bowal was most recently a member of British Columbia’s under-18 women’s team that captured a bronze medal at the national U-18 championship, earlier this month in Quebec City.

The 17-year-old is currently attending Toronto’s Leaside High School and playing with the Leaside Junior Wildcats of Ontario’s Provincial Women’s Hockey League.

At the bantam and midget levels, Bowal played on four British Columbia championship teams. She was also a member of the Prince George Northern Capitals, who won the 2016 Mac’s AAA Midget World Invitational.

“Coming from a small town, I knew I wanted to attend a small university with small classes, and UNB fits those needs perfectly,” said Bowal. “After meeting Coach Hilworth and touring campus, I knew UNB was going to be a perfect fit.”

“We’re pleased to announce Myah as a Varsity Red,” said Hilworth. “Her experience playing in the PWHL and U18 national championship will bring leadership to our young team. We’re very excited to see how Myah grows in our program, and the impact she’ll leave.”

Katherine Chadwick is also playing in the PWHL, with the Ottawa Junior Lady Sens.

With two goals and six assists so far, Chadwick is tied for third in scoring for the Lady Sens, who currently sit in second place in the 20-team league.

“We’re extremely excited to bring a player such as Katherine into our program,” said Hilworth. “She’s a natural leader on and off the ice, and she’s a gritty player who isn’t afraid to use her speed.”

“I’m looking forward to the challenge of being a part of the new women’s hockey program,” said Chadwick. “I am beyond proud that Coach Hilworth has asked me to join her team, and excited to have the opportunity to play for such a driven and passionate coach.”

The PWHL is also where you’ll find Lily George.

She’s currently a member of the Barrie Sharks, and tied for second in team scoring.

At the midget level, George was a member of two provincial championship teams.

"UNB has the small school comforts I was looking for, but with all the resources and facilities a student-athlete would want,” said George. “Coach Hilworth wants to make UNB a top team, and I think it would be awesome to be a part of that.”

“Lily is an exciting player, who’ll create tons of offence for our team next year,” said Hilworth. “We have no doubt that Lily will be an impact player for us going forward.”

Bowal, Chadwick, and George will join the Varsity Reds beginning in the 2018-19 season.
