(HALIFAX, NS) In the first match of the best-of-three Subway Atlantic University Sport men’s volleyball championship, the Dalhousie Tigers beat UNB Varsity Reds in straight sets.

The 3-0 score, however, was not indicative of the parity seen in the scores of the sets.

Dal won 25-22, 25-23 and 25-23.

In the first set, the Varsity Reds were able to get out to an early 8-4 lead.

UNB got to 21-20 late in the set, but the Tigers swung back at the most crucial time, winning it 25-22.

The second set saw more even play than the first, resulting in a 10-10 tie midway through the set.

Dalhousie pulled out to a 19-16 lead on route to a 25-23 win.

The Varsity Reds jumped out to quick 5-2 lead in the third, but Dal drew even before taking a 15-11 lead.

UNB didn’t go quietly, tying the set 21-21. But, that’s all Dalhousie would allow, taking the set 25-23, and the match 3-0.

The Tigers were led by Matthew Donovan(London, ON) with 15 kills. Jeffrey Walton(Sudbury, ON) had 14 kills and Subway Player of the Game Graham Schmuland(Calgary, AB) had five kills and two blocks for the Tigers.

Pascal McCarthy(Fredericton, NB) powered the Varsity Reds with 13 kills, while Ryan Colpitts(Fredericton, NB) contributed nine kills and a block for UNB.

The Varsity Reds host match two of the series, next Saturday, at 7:00pm.
