(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Varsity Reds scored three times in the second period and three more times in the third as they beat the UPEI Panthers 6-2 on Saturday night.
Chris Clapperton(Cap d'Espoir, QC) scored twice and had an assist to lead UNB.
Kameron Kielly(Charlottetown, PE) and Marcus Power(St. John's, NL) had a goal and an assist each for the Panthers.
Clapperton's first goal gave UNB the lead after UPEI had opened the scoring.
It came on a great pass from defencman Olivier LeBlanc(Quebec City, QC).
"It was a great breakout," said Clapperton. "Ollie got the puck at the blue line and was going to shoot. He just saw me open, it was a great pass and I just put it in the net."
Clapperton's second goal proved to be the game winner.
Freshman netminder Rylan Parenteau(Saskatoon, SK) stopped 15 shots to earn the win in his Atlantic University Sport debut. Parenteau also recorded an assist.
"I felt good coming into it and the guys put in a great effort to help me get that win tonight," said Parenteau.
Matt Mahalak(Monroe, MICH) took the loss in the UPEI net.
"It was a matter of persistence and staying with the plan," said Varsity Reds head coach Gardiner MacDougall. "I thought we had a lot of good opportunities in the first. Obviously, he's a top-notch goaltender and you have to wear him down and we were fortunate enough to be able to do that."
"The names come and go, but the team plays the same way," said Panthers head coach Forbes MacPherson of the Varsity Reds' relentless attack. "UNB started to gather some steam and they carried some power-play momentum into 5 on 5 and then they capitalized a couple of times."
The Varsity Reds, now 4-0, visit Acadia on Friday.
The Panthers are now 2-2. They travel to Saint Mary's on Friday.
